Give way (sign 205) in the German driving test: what the examiner looks for

§ 41 (1) StVO with annex 2 no. 2 (sign 205)·With Pro·Updated: October 2026·DriveDE

In short: At "Give way (sign 205)" the examiner mainly wants to see: Spot sign 205 early: you have to give way; Reduce speed and be ready to brake, so others can see: I will wait; Look both ways along the priority road; Let vehicles and cyclists on the priority road go first. A severe mistake that can end the test: turn in briskly, the car from the left will brake a little.

You approach a T-junction. On the right is the “give way” sign (sign 205), and a give-way line (sign 341) is marked on the road. The road ahead is the priority road. A car approaches from the left, a cyclist comes from the right on the cycle path beside the priority road.

The examiner says„Biegen Sie an der Einmündung bitte rechts ab.“
"Turn right at the junction, please."

What you have to show

The right order

  1. Spot sign 205, reduce speed, be ready to brake
  2. Mirrors, indicate right in good time
  3. Look left and right along the priority road
  4. If the view is poor: edge forward carefully until you can see the road
  5. Shoulder check right, watch for cyclists and pedestrians
  6. Turn in when nobody is endangered or substantially hindered

Typical mistakes

Turn in briskly, the car from the left will brake a little severe mistakeWhoever must give way may only go if nobody is endangered or substantially hindered. If the driver with priority has to brake because of you, that is a right-of-way violation.
Only look left, nothing comes from the right anywayCars and cyclists also come from the right on the priority road. You look both ways.

What the examiner records in the protocol

The examiner files every situation under five competence areas in the electronic test protocol. This is how the points of this situation are spread:

Observation of traffic
  • Spot sign 205 early: you have to give way
  • Look both ways along the priority road
  • Shoulder check when turning right, watch for cyclists and pedestrians
Adaptation of speed
  • Reduce speed and be ready to brake, so others can see: I will wait
  • Let vehicles and cyclists on the priority road go first severe mistake
  • Turn in only when I neither endanger nor substantially hinder anyone
Communication
  • Indicate right in good time

A strong answer

I spot sign 205: I have to give way. So I reduce speed and stay ready to brake, so others see that I will wait. I check the mirror and indicate right in good time. Then I look left and right along the priority road and let the car and the cyclist pass first. If my view is limited, I edge forward carefully. With a shoulder check I watch for cyclists and pedestrians. I only turn in when nobody is endangered or substantially hindered by me.

What the law says

§ 41 (1) StVO with annex 2 no. 2 (sign 205): whoever drives a vehicle must give way. § 8 (2) StVO: whoever must give way has to show in good time by how they drive, in particular by moderate speed, that they will wait. They may only drive on if they can see that whoever has priority is neither endangered nor substantially hindered. If they cannot see this because the spot is unclear, they may edge carefully into the crossing or junction until they have a clear view. The priority also covers cyclists on the cycle path beside the priority road.

Quick check

You are at sign 205, a car from the left has its right indicator on. What do you do?

  1. Pull out, he is turning off
  2. Wait until it is certain that he really turns
  3. Honk and drive off
Show the answer
B. An indicator alone is no guarantee. You only go when you can see for certain that he is turning and nobody is endangered.
