Turning right across a cycle lane in the German driving test: what the examiner looks for

§ 9 (3) StVO·With Pro

You want to turn right at a junction. A cycle lane runs straight on to your right. Pedestrians want to cross the road you are turning into.

The examiner says„An der nächsten Kreuzung bitte rechts abbiegen.“
"Turn right at the next junction, please."

What you have to show

The right order

  1. Indicate right in good time
  2. Slow down and keep to the right
  3. Right mirror and shoulder check right
  4. Let cyclists going straight on pass
  5. Let crossing pedestrians go
  6. Turn

Typical mistakes

Turn quickly in front of the cyclistThe cyclist is going straight on and has priority.
Honk so the cyclist brakesHonking does not change the cyclist's priority.

A strong answer

I indicate right in good time, slow down and keep to the right. Before turning I check the right mirror and do a shoulder check to the right, because someone may come straight on along the cycle lane. Cyclists going straight on and pedestrians crossing the road have priority. If necessary I stop and wait, then I turn.

What the law says

§ 9 (3) StVO: when turning you must let vehicles through, including cyclists on cycle lanes, and take special care of pedestrians, waiting if necessary.

Quick check

You are indicating right. A cyclist comes up from behind on the cycle lane, going straight on. What do you do?

  1. Turn quickly in front of him
  2. Let him pass, then turn
  3. Honk so he brakes
Show the answer
B. The cyclist is going straight on and has priority. You wait until he has passed.
