Residential area, 30 km/h. The next junction has no signs, no traffic lights and no markings. A car is approaching from the right.

The examiner says„An der nächsten Kreuzung bitte geradeaus.“
"Go straight on at the next junction, please."

What you have to show

The right order

  1. Recognise: no signs, so right before left
  2. Approach slowly, ready to brake
  3. Look right first
  4. Give way to the car from the right
  5. Look left, watch for cyclists
  6. Go straight on

Typical mistakes

Drive straight through, your road is widerWithout signs, a wider road gives no priority.
Look only to the leftTraffic from the right has priority, so you look there first.

A strong answer

The junction has no signs, so right before left applies. I approach slowly and ready to brake, look right first and give way to the car from the right. I also look left and watch for cyclists and pedestrians. When everything is clear, I go straight on.

What the law says

§ 8 (1) StVO: at junctions, whoever comes from the right has priority unless signs or lights say otherwise.

Quick check

At an unmarked junction a car comes from the left, nobody from the right. Who goes first?

  1. The car from the left
  2. You, but carefully and ready to brake
  3. Whoever is faster
Show the answer
B. For the car on the left you come from the right, so you have priority. Still drive ready to brake in case the other driver does not give way.
