Changing lanes to the left in the German driving test: what the examiner looks for

City road with two lanes in your direction. You are in the right lane and need to turn left further ahead. Cars are driving behind you in the left lane.

The examiner says„An der übernächsten Kreuzung bitte links abbiegen.“
"Turn left at the second junction, please."

A strong answer

I move over to the left early. I check the interior mirror, then the left side mirror, indicate left and do a shoulder check to the left into the blind spot. I only change when there is a big enough gap and I do not hinder anyone, and then smoothly and steadily.

What the law says

§ 7 (5) StVO: you may only change lanes if endangering others is ruled out. The change must be announced clearly and in good time with the indicator.
