Roundabout in the German driving test: what the examiner looks for

§ 9a (1) StVO·Free

You are approaching a roundabout with the signs "roundabout" and "give way". A car is already driving in the roundabout.

The examiner says„Im Kreisverkehr bitte die zweite Ausfahrt.“
"Take the second exit at the roundabout, please."

What you have to show

The right order

  1. Approach slowly, ready to brake
  2. Look left: traffic in the roundabout has priority
  3. Enter without indicating
  4. Indicate right before the exit
  5. Shoulder check right, watch for cyclists and pedestrians
  6. Leave the roundabout

Typical mistakes

Indicate left when enteringIndicating when entering a roundabout is not allowed.
Enter in front of the car in the roundaboutWith the give-way sign, traffic in the roundabout has priority.

A strong answer

I approach slowly and ready to brake. The give-way sign shows that traffic in the roundabout has priority, so I look left and let the car in the roundabout go. I do not indicate when entering. Before the second exit I indicate right, do a shoulder check and watch for cyclists and pedestrians at the exit.

What the law says

§ 9a (1) StVO: indicating when entering a roundabout is not allowed. With sign 205 the traffic in the roundabout has priority. Leaving is indicated to the right.

Quick check

How do you indicate at a roundabout?

  1. Left when entering
  2. Right when entering and at the exit
  3. Not when entering, right before the exit
Show the answer
C. Indicating when entering is not allowed; you indicate right in good time before leaving.
