Typical mistakes
A strong answer
The bus has its hazard lights on, so special rules apply. I pass only at walking speed and with enough side distance, and I expect children to run into the road in front of or behind the bus. If necessary I stop and wait. I do not overtake a bus that is approaching the stop with its hazard lights on.
What the law says
§ 20 (3) and (4) StVO: do not overtake buses approaching a stop with hazard lights on. Pass stopped buses with hazard lights only at walking speed, oncoming traffic on the same carriageway too, and wait if necessary.
Quick check
A bus with hazard lights stops on the opposite side of the same carriageway. What applies to you?
- Nothing, it is on the other side
- Walking speed when passing, wait if necessary
- Always stop until the bus leaves
